Things Every Runner Should Know
- When you race, wear your race number on the
FRONT of your shirt or shorts so that it can be seen by the
finish line officials who enter your number into a computer as you
finish. If the "clock guy" can't see your number, he's going
to assume you're a "bandit" and ignore you. When you pin on
your number before the race, pin all four corners. Otherwise,
the number flips up and all the clock guy can see is the back side
of your number as you coming racing across the finish line.
- If you finish a race, then jog back out on
the course to "pick up" a less speedy runner, please
don't approach
the finish line a second time. Unless you're dressed like
giant tomato, clock guy isn't going to remember that he already
recorded your finishing time and race number. When you cross
the line again, it confuses the race results.
- "Bandit" - one who participates in a road race
without properly registering, paying the entry fee and obtaining a
race number. (parents
of young kids who run with their properly registered kids without
actually registering themselves are not considered bandits if they
step off the course and do not cross the finish line no less than 30
meters from the finish line. They let their kids cross the
finish line "on their own".)
- "Low Life Bandit Scum" - a bandit who not only runs
the race, but also crosses the finish line and takes a
finishers
card.
- If you are running as a "bandit", please
step off
the course before crossing the finish line. If you do cross
the finish line, please do not take a finishing card. It's bad
enough that you're mooching off the work and resources of others,
please don't screw up the results too.
- Finishers cards - Did you know that when you run
a race, but don't take a few seconds to fill out your finishers
card, you make compiling race results more difficult? Most
local races use the "low tech" and "inexpensive"
(in terms of our equipment rental fees) Striders timing
equipment combined with finishers card to compile race results.
Neither system is perfect, but used together the race director can
compile very accurate race results. If the clock operator
can't record your bib (race) number when you cross the finish line (like
when you finish in a group of two or more people) and
you don't fill out a finishers card, then your race results will not
be captured or recorded. It's sort of like putting together a
puzzle. When you complete your finishers card, you're helping
us ensure we have all the pieces to the puzzle.
- If you have to blow chunks (barf) at the finish,
please step away from the clock guy's computer before barfing.
